‘E-readers will be the death of print media’

In this rapidly developing world, I feel that E-readers have come into our daily lives with everyone using them for everything. This includes, the usage of newspapers on e Readers, articles, books these days are also downloaded and viewed on e Readers. Since everything is done digitally, why not use e Readers for all the information we need.

E-readers would be death for print media because in this world, almost all individuals use these readers for everything they need to read. Especially when people are traveling, the would not like to tag books and heaps of paper along with them as all would be available in one single device for them. Economically  it pretty much makes sense too as people no longer need to purchase the hard paper copies. Other than that, there also aren't any risks of these books getting damaged and lost on e-books because you are able to save them, however the physical printed books do have these disadvantages that they bring along with them. People also have to worry about getting rid of these books when not needed which is another expense and time consuming to them. People are also able to carry the readers around due to its portability in one small sized tab, however books and printed publications are usually heavy and of different sized which people do not prefer to carry around with them. so why not pick the e Reader over the printed publications?

Books however,  are another story, unlike newspapers and magazines, books have a major culture behind them. People value books immensely and have a great sentimental value attached to these books. The importance if books for them is immense and some people prefer books to electronic devices due to health issues later caused by the devices such as various eye problem.s Sometimes, using the e Readers may not be very easy to utlise for some people, it may take them a while to adjust the readers which is time consuming. e Readers also come with their own costs of purchasing and 3G internet which sometimes may also lead to addiction for others. E readers may also be expensive for people belonging to the lower class group who cannot afford these as opposed to the paper backs that are cheaper. Sometimes, the printed books are also very useful at schools and make a great differences to learning as opposed to using the e readers which may affect the students in a great way such as addiction and health (eye) problems.

Overall, I do not feel that the E-readers will be the death of print media because many people still believe in the importance of books and still value their existence as because of  their various advantages. However, most people may also switch to using e-readers due to their many advantages that outweigh those of print media. Therefore, it depends on the usefulness and value  of the print media which will determine the death print media by e-readers.

Issues arise from digital books/e-books AND digital publishing.

In this rapidly developing world, almost all people chose to purchase in digital books and digital publishing however they are not always advantageous. Issues may arise from using them. These issues include:
Ø      Some people usually prefer reading off paper than the computers however some digital publishing do not have the option of allowing others to print the e-book due to the existence of DRM’s
Ø      Technology changes all the time, therefore people may not always be able to keep up to using digital publishing as this trend may end along with it too.
Ø      Gradually as people use digital publishing, their tastes may change and vary and they  begin wanting to switch between media which would be will eventually a loss for the digital publishing individuals as their published work may not be looked at anymore.
Ø      E-books may be expensive and after purchasing it would be hard to return it back to the author as it is not physical.
-->Ease of theft: When work is stored in a digital format, it is very easily shared and distributed and copied often with a loss of revenue to the rights holder.
-->Digital readers are always to be purchased along with the e-books which is an extra cost for users.
--> Anyone is able to publish anything in the digital publishing work, so the books are not always reliable.

Current digital publishing systems vs. future digital publishing expectations (changes). Important to briefly discuss the role of the internet in publishing

Currently the world uses a variety of digital systems to publish a wide range of books so that many people are able to share them among friends and each other. The current ones are great and examples of these include e-books, online magazines, electronic journals, online newspaper, PDF and CD-ROM’s. These re the current systems that we use to share digitally to spread knowledge on various literature  The new digital media available that people will continue using are blog spots  file sharing. Mobile apps, pod casts, collaborative software and the digital publication apps which are the newer medias. Apple and Adobe systems are some of the technology vendors that allow for digital publication to be utilized. As this world develops, introduction to newer digital publishing methods may be available. In the future, I predict the existence of digital e-books to aid the disabled in various ways. Much of the disabled individuals will be introduced to digital media through encompassing multimedia in the books. For example, videos, graphics, 3D model printing may be available and may be incorporated without interfering with the mainstream reading experience. Readers will also be able manipulate content in the books. Animations and interactions may also be available inside the digital books in the nearer future.

Publishing an e-book vs. traditional publishing

Traditional Publishing
E-book publishing (e-book)
Does not have an existing platform (reputation, blog)
Has an existing platform to marker and distribute
Doesn’t need to make money from their book to pay the bills
Will depend more on the book income to survive
Takes several processes before you can launch your product
Faster to launch the product
Time consuming and wastes al lot of resources and money when a book needs to be revised and printed again to share
Free to update your book whenever you want and however through the computer
The author completes his/her manuscript, writes a proposal and submits it to the publishing house where they review it and decide whether it is a good product for sale or not. The publishers then are rightfully allowed to decide on the design and package of the book, prints as many copies of the book as it thinks will sell.
An author who decides to self-publish basically becomes the publisher. The author proofreads the final text and publishes it online for anyone to purchase and view
The many prints of the book may al l not be sold creating various losses
There are no losses in publishing an e-book as you can make as many copies as you like.
Time consuming method to create the book and publish it. The author has to take the book to several publishing houses to look out for their interest in the book. The actual publishing takes another year.
With self-publishing an e-book, as soon as you are done with making the book you can publish it without and consent and re-publish as many revised copies several times which is less time consuming.
With traditional publishing costs are very high due to the printing, editing, advertising and distributing
When publishing tan e-book the costs are usually lower as everything is done online
With traditional publishing, the authors do not have any control over whether the book will be published or not as they need the publishers full consent and acceptance of the literature
The publishing of the book is all under the authors control and they decide whether to publish it online or not.
